Panonnia Minor 2016. Tournament, Game #3

GAME #3

Warriors of the Dark Gods VS. Dwarven Holds

Victory points: 20-0
Battle points: Opponent conceded
Deployment type: Classic
Secondary objectives: Secure Target

So this is my third and last game of the Panonnia Minor 2016. tournament.
We're playing Secure Target secondary objective. Each player places a marker on the board, 12" away from their Deployment zone and 24" apart from the other marker. The player controlling the most markers by placing more Scoring units within 6" of the marker wins this Secondary objective.

This here is a snapshot from WoDG turn 1:

My whole army marches forward to engage Dwarven line in close combat as fast as they can.
The Dragon and the Bloodbeast hide behind a hill as they don't want to get shot. Two units of Warhounds run alongside that impassable terrain by the edge of the board toward the Dwarven marker and the Dwarven flanking force (consisting of 3 Hold guardians, 10 Clan warriors and 10 Clan marksmen with +1 to hit).
The Wasteland warriors were an inch short of guarding that wall in the middle of the board (units Guarding the wall get Hard cover).
During the magic Phase, I summon a Totemic beast, but the opponent dispels it.
Then the boosted version of Chilling Howl 12" Aura goes off, and now my opponent's shooting suffers a -1 to wound modifier when shooting at my units in the middle of the board.
Pretty darn sweet.
During his first turn, the opponent shoots 2 units of Warhounds off the board and moves two Steam copters closer so they can harass the Dragon and the Bloodbeast.
His Grudge buster (a dwarven zeppelin, how cool is that?) flies over my lines, but it won't do much during the course of this game, except maybe kill one Pestilence Wasteland knight.

And then comes WoDG turn two.
I charge my warrior block into his Greybeards and Deep watch (holding 3 characters), and I make it on a 10+ roll. Oh, what a glorious day!
On top of that, the Battle shrine's Ancestral aid Bound spell goes off, giving that Wasteland warrior block rerolls to hit. The Greybeards and the Deep watch have hatred against my Wasteland Warrior unit, however (dwarven Ancient Grudge special rule).
The warriors easily shrug off a bunch of S4, wounding on 5+ (plus hatred) and return a bunch of S6, poisoned attacks with rerolls to hit, decimating the Greybeards unit. Two challenges were also issued. The first one was a pillow fight between Wasteland warrior and Deep watch champions.
However, my Harbinger BSB puts 2 wounds on his King using his good old S3, armour ignoring breath attack, and receives none in return (T4 saved the Harbinger in this case; if he were T5, the King's attacks would land at S10 - that's Rune of Smashing, I believe).
His characters (Thane BSB, Runic smith) with great weapons kill a few warriors in return.
The dwarves lose this combat by a bunch, but hold their ground.

In his next turn, my opponent puts a wound on the Dragon behind the hill using Steam copters (I forgot about the Lucky shield and Lucky charm this time).
The Greybeard unit (along with the BSB) breaks in combat during this turn.
I also actually manage to wound his BSB somehow, but I don't remember how. I think my unit Wasteland warrior champion was responsible.
His flank moves toward the Dwarven marker.

During my turn 3, I sort of wrap this up, by charging his Deep guard with 6 Pestilence Wasteland trolls. Remaining 4 Pestilence Wasteland knights chase the Greybeards off the board and overrun into his warmachines. The Dragon and the Bloodbeast move out of the hiding.
I mop up his Deep watch unit (along with the King and the Runic smith) and we end the game after turn three.

I have to say that the opponent was great all throughout the game, despite my unbelievably dumb luck. We both agreed that this battle would have looked very different if that insane 10+ charge didn't take place. In hindsight, I think that this charge was a good decision on my part, since WoDG can't risk taking too much shooting because of the low model count (even if it means being locked in combat with 2 enemy combat blocks at the same time).
In a way, this was an "all in" kind of game and I got lucky.

So, that's it.
With three wins and 53 Victory points in total, I have won this tournament.

Secondary objectives: Capture the Flags

Results of the tournament

So this was my second game of the Panonnia Minor 2016. 9th Age tournament.
Unfortunately, I only have two pictures from this game, so I'm going to keep this report short and sweet.

These are the two pictures and they're from my opponent's second turn:

I deployed my whole army at once again, and I got to go first.
I've tried my best to keep my Dragon Lord out of the harm's way throughout the game.
However, my Bloodbeast got shot to death during the first turn of the game by a joint effort of a Blood chariot and a Blazing chariot.
I swear, this thing got killed at the start of two out of three games I played on this tournament and it didn't even deliver a single wound in three whole games. Next time I'm taking a Pestilence Wasteland giant, just because of an extra wound and 15 points lower price.
The Dragon gets shot during turn two, but ignores the hit because of his trusted Lucky shield.

That unit of 5 Pestilence Wasteland knights with lances in the middle of the board gets charged by 4 Crushers over a long distance. And unbelievably, the Pestilence knights actually manage to grind out those Crushers over a period of few turns, losing only 1 knight in the process.
Crusher cavalry really does suck.

Everything else moves a little forward, except those Horrors who get charged in the rear by an ambushing Pestilence Fallen beast and remain tied up there until turn six, when the Dragon Lord sweeps them all up.
The Dragon lord gets shot by a Blood cannon, loses three wounds and kills a unit of Furies and a Carnal chariot on his way to that combat.
A Totemic beast also gets summoned by my Shamanism Sorcerer, but he only manages to kill a chaffing unit of Furies before getting shot to death (or maybe he got killed in the combat with Horrors, I don't really remember anymore).

I try my best to avoid his Scourge of Wrath greater daemon with my dragon, since he does Multiple wounds (2) to monsters and my Dragon doesn't do well in challenges, having great weapon and not much of a save (only 3+ armour, first failed save rerollable).
So I charge him with my Pestilence Battle shrine in order to tie him up (because of that -1 to hit, 4+ armour save and a 4+ Ward save) while I march my Pestilence warrior horde toward the Slaughterers. And I manage to do that, at least for a turn. He fluffs his attacks, I make a few saves and win by a charge and a flank. He passes his leadership test, though.

Then everything goes wrong.
Slaughterers charge the Warrior block and the Scourge of Wrath actually manages to win combat with the Battle shrine by one this time (despite losing hatred and +1S during the first turn). The Battle shrine runs, and the Greater Daemon hits into the flank of the Warrior block. There he kills my BSB in a challenge (having hatred again and all that stuff). I just can't make save a single friggin' 5+ armour, 6+ Ward save and I only need to pass 1 out of 4 for him to stay alive.
So the Palanquin BSB dies and doesn't even get to use his S3, armour ignoring breath weapon.
The Warriors lose this combat and get overrun, leaving me in a dire situation.
The Battle shrine later on rallies on top of that hill in my deployment zone.

Now, this part here saved me...
Since those trolls kept stumbling forward due to failing Stupidity a couple of times (I've played them poorly throughout the game, but I got lucky and that actually helped me win), they got directly in the way of the Slaughterers who had to overrun first (being the largest unit in the combat). Unfortunately for my opponent, those Slaughterers covered the whole footprint of my Wasteland troll unit, forcing the Scourge of Wrath to fly over them, thus keeping him out of the combat for a turn (which was, luckily for me, the end of the game).
The Slaughterers then got charged in the flank by four Pestilence Wasteland Knights and got slaughtered themselves, leaving only the BSB on 1 wound remaining.
By the end of turn six, both the Harbinger BSB and the unit of Horrors get banished.

The game ends with a 13-7 victory for the WoDG, but only because of the Secondary objective.
I've won this one because those Wasteland knights held the only remaining banner on the board.

The opponent was great and the whole game had this sort of laid-back attitude to it even though our units were dying in heaps (in true Chaos style).

So that was the second game!

Stay tuned for the third and the last report of this tournament and check out the links at the bottom of the post.

Panonnia Minor 2016. Tournament, Game #1

Last week our club organized it's first fantasy event in a while.
We organized a small 9th Age tournament with six players participating in it.
The main goal of the tournament was to have fun and to learn a thing or two about the rules of the game.
The tournament was played according to the latest version of the 9th Age rules (v1.3) and three games were played within the limit of 5000 points.
The original plan was to to play tournament on a Swiss-based system, but due to work obligations of one of the participants we decided to draw all the pairs up front.

Results of the tournament

I brought my Warriors of the Dark Gods mono-Pestilence list to this tournament.
My intention was to bring a list which was both fluffy and strong on the table.
The opponents were friendly and competitive and we've all had a great time playing the 9th Age.

Now onto the battle reports...
Unfortunately, I don't have too many shots of the games, but I'll try my best to recreate the battles using snapshots from a video of the event.
You can find the video of the event on the bottom of this post.

GAME #1

Warriors of the Dark Gods VS. Undying Dynasties

Victory points: 20-0
Battle points: +3560
Deployment type: Classic
Secondary objectives: Break-through

Before I start the report, I have to note that my opponent usually plays WoDG and that this was his second time playing the Undying Dynasties.
I have to give props to the guy for bringing this unusually rare and tactically demanding army on the table for the sake of diversity.
This was also my first time playing against the UD, so I had a ton of fun.

Now onto the report.

I won the initial roll and chose the side of the table.
After my opponent deployed the first unit, I chose to deploy my whole army in order to get to play first. WoDG live to dive into battle, so this was pretty important to me in all of the games.

So during the deployment the board looks like this:

Before the first turn, 2 units of Skeleton cavalry and 2 units of Warhounds made their Vanguard moves.

I started my first turn moving pretty aggressively towards the UD lines.
I moved my Warhounds in the way of the opponent's monsters and chariots as I wanted to keep those threats chaffed-up by expendable units.
The Dragon took a safe route behind the impassable terrain and a hill on the opponents side of the board. He only has a 3+ Armor save and the Lucky shield to ignore the first hit, so I had to keep him safe.

During his first turn, the opponent moves the rightmost unit of the Skeleton cavalry very close to my lines. I had to get rid of those early in the game (while I could still catch them), since the Skeleton cavalry counts as a scoring unit, as I didn't want to give secondary objective points to my opponent so easily. We were playing Break-through secondary objective, in which the opponent with the most Scoring units in the opponent's Deployment Zone wins +3 Victory points at the end of the game.
I just didn't want to risk the possibility of them getting away with all those points.

During my second turn I charge my Warrior block into the rightmost Skeleton cavalry unit and my Bloodbeast into his Battle sphinx.

The Pestilence-marked Wasteland warriors (armed with Great Weapons, and Banner of Filth which grants Poisoned attack and deployed in a horde formation) were accompanied by a Pestilence Shamanism Sorcerer and my Palanquin Pestilence Harbinger BSB (also carrying the War banner for +1 combat score).
Between all those attacks, the Warriors killed the Skeleton cavalry to a man and reformed on a hill, facing the opponent's main combat line.

Bloodbeast charging his Sphinx was a whole different story, though.
I thought that Bloodbeast could survive this encounter and chaff this thing up a bit until the help arrives. After all, that thing was bound to the Lord and had WS 8, LD9, S6, T5, AS 4+, Hatred and 5 attacks plus Frenzy.
Boy, was I wrong...
I had no idea that this thing was friggin' T8 with 2 Tomb guards on it. I was wounding it on sixes.
To make the matter even worse, the Battle sphinx also had Lethal strike cast on the whole model, instead of just those two regular Necropolis guards.
So I rolled first, fluffed all of my to-wound rolls and when the Sphinx returned attacks, the Bloodbeast promptly died.
I also move my Dragon Lord behind my opponent's lines and I move 5 Wasteland knights closer to the center of the table during the movement phase.

My opponent's charges the unit of 6 Pestilence trolls with his Battle sphinx and Shabtis during second turn.  They did a lot of wounds, while also being protected by a 5+ ward save granted by a nearby Tomb architect.
However, the trolls hold their ground due to a lot of lucky 4+ Regeneration saves.

The opponent turns his two main fighting blocks (Necropolis guard with a Pharaoh and Tomb architect & Skeletons with 2 mages) toward my Dragon lord.
The dragon takes 2 or 3 wounds during the magic phase.

During my third turn, I combo charge his chariots in the middle of the board with Pestilence Wasteland knights, Pestilence Battle Shrine and the Wasteland warriors horde.
The Wasteland knights make all of their dangerous terrain tests (had to charge over a wall)
They destroyed all of the chariots and the Knights then overran into the flank of the Shabtis, while the Warriors positioned themselves facing the rear of the Necropolis guard unit.
Dragon lord charges the Skeleton horde positioning itself right by the edge of the board, just out of the sight of the Necropolis guard units. This was a major mistake in my opponent's positioning.
Had he wheeled that unit a bit, they would have brought a ton of  Lethal strike attacks, probably finishing off the Dragon in that same turn.
This fight with the Skeleton horde will last until my opponent's turn 5, resulting in a fully crumbled unit and two dead mages.

In the remaining turns I charge my unit of Pestilence warriors into the Necropolis guard.
The Trolls and Knights manage to grind the Battle sphinx and Shabtis to dust and the Warriors destroy the Necropolis guard unit.
Pharaoh gets killed by Pestilence BSB in a challenge due to Necrotic Miasma gift, which granted him S3 Armour piercing (6) Breath attack. Poisoned attacks took care of the Pharaoh's last remaining wound, if I remember correctly.
By the end of the turn 5 my opponent only has a unit of Skeleton Cavalry and a unit of 3 Skeleton Chariots in my deployment zone (both Scoring units).

In my turn 6, I move my 3 Scoring units (Warriors, Knight, Trolls) into my opponent's deployment zone, seizing the Secondary objective and gaining 3 additional Battle points.
During this game, I lost a unit of 8 Warhounds, a Bloodbeast and my ambushing Fallen beast (I completely forgot about it and didn't even roll any of the Ambush attempts).
The end result is a 20-0 victory for WoDG.

To be honest, this was a very interesting battle since neither side had an upper hand in the fight until turn 4, when all those WoDG combo charges took place.
After a turn of heavy close-combat fighting, the battle unfolded very quickly.
The magic phase was pretty uneventful throughout the game.

So that's it!

Stay tuned for more and check out the links at the bottom of the post.

Best regards and may the Dice gods bless your rolls!
